Nepal is one of the poorest countries in South Asia. Many families living in the rural areas rely upon subsistence farming as their livelihoods. Oftentimes, children are obliged to work rather than attend school to support their families. This continues the cycle of poverty to the next generation. Education is a critical resource, which is inaccessible to most children in the rural areas. Education can transform the lives of children and provide them an outlet to overcome poverty.
In 2012, OMPT partnered with Save the Children to strengthen the Literacy Boost project using video and cordless projectors. Matt and Patrice York traveled to Nepal to facilitate a Video Education Workshop for 22 staff members from Save the Children. In addition to providing training, OMPT delivered 2 camera kits, 12 projector kits and 12 recharge kits. The videos created will be used in Save the Children’s Literacy Boost programming. Using the battery-powered projectors, Save the Children staff will be able to give professional development training to teachers in rural locations which will improve learning outcomes for thousands of children.
