Dr. Freund currently serves as Dean for the School of Health Sciences, Pasadena City College, Pasadena, CA., where she is responsible for the overall operations of nine health science programs, each with professional accreditation requirements, faculty supervision and development needs, and budget management.
Prior to joining Pasadena City College, Dr. Freund was Associate Professor of Medicine and Vice-Chair for Clinical Research in the Department of Internal Medicine, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA. She worked with faculty to facilitate research, develop proposals for external funding, and expand sponsored research across the largest department in the medical school. Dr. Freund mentored undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral student researchers with several receiving research awards and selection for poster/paper presentations at professional conferences. She also chaired the institutional review board for human subjects’ protection, working with faculty, departments, and state and federal regulatory agencies to ensure compliance.
In her faculty role, she was responsible for program development, implementation and evaluation of a novel academic clinical and research program addressing a pressing societal issue and for designing and integrating educational experiences/curriculum elements related to this program for a variety of learner levels from undergraduate through post-doctoral in several programs offered. She supervised and mentored a very diverse community of students and staff, postdoctoral fellows and faculty, establishing highly effective working relationships. Dr. Freund successfully authored numerous peer-reviewed competitive grant proposals which resulted in funding for these activities for ten years. She translated the research results to a commercial product awarded a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office.
Dr. Freund has a strong commitment to the advancement of cultural competency, particularly as it
relates to achievement gaps and building culturally competent teams and organizations.
