Project Dates:
May 2008 - 2017
Subject:

English in Action aims to provide English as a new technical skill to 25 million primary, secondary school children and adult learners. The effort will bring innovative ways of learning the language using modern technology. The understanding and use of the English language will help the people in Bangladesh contribute to the economic development of their country.

Target Audience:

It will look to change the lives of up to 25 million people using new approaches to teaching and learning. During Pilot phase 600 primary schools will be reached, 200 secondary schools and 1600 teachers. Bangladesh has significant environmental issues it must face. The most significant comes from river flooding due to monsoons and climate change. In addition many of these areas lack good agricultural practices which is also polluting the rivers.

Technology Solution:

Provide workshops for students. Not only will English in Action work together with government schools all over the country to improve the quality of English teaching by introducing modern pedagogical approaches, but in addition EIA will introduce teachers as well as students to modern information and communication technology. EIA will produce a wide range of materials supporting both the professional development of teachers as well as the learning process in the classroom. The Project will also build the capacity of teachers to use the new materials. The materials will be both digital and print based which will include printed supplementary teaching and learning materials, e-books, and audio-video materials. The materials will link to an interactive audio Primary Teaching and Learning Programme (PTLP), and centre on ICT based teachers training for a Secondary Teaching and Learning Programme (STLP).

English in Action (EIA) was formally launched at the Westin Hotel on 11 March 2010. EIA is a joint venture of the Bangladesh Government and the UK Government designed to change the way in which English is acquired by children, young people and adults in Bangladesh. A significant problem people have in Bangladesh is that rivers overflow, therefore getting information to people through technology is vital.
