Building Education Support Systems for Teachers (BESST) works with their community, government and institutional partners to identify, design and implement projects that promote quality education and a vibrant civil society.
Delivery of radio-based in-service teacher training programs to primary school teachers.
Results:
Developed, with the MOE and World Bank, the District Teacher Training Team (DT3) strategy, recruited and trained 1,525 trainers, trained more than 50,600 teachers and principals in INSET I curriculum and more than 3,135 principals in school management during the 2007-2008 academic year. Teachers’ enthusiasm for this training was evidenced by the 98 percent attendance and completion rates. Approximately 2.5 million Afghan students stand to benefit from the improved methodology in which their teachers are trained under the BESST project.
Developed In-School Support Activities (ITSA), to improve the quality of teaching and level of community involvement in schools across the 11 provinces, resulting in 55,295 teacher observations, the establishment of 4,226 Teacher Learning Circles, and 3,000 School Improvement Plan groups.
Developed radio and television distance learning programs to supplement education courses in pedagogy and subject matter content for primary teachers. Broadcast 765 radio programs and 27 television programs for teachers via 32 radio and television stations.
