Over three decades and in many countries, Interactive Radio Instruction (IRI) has demonstrated its enormous benefits for disadvantaged populations in remote rural schools and for children in better-resourced urban classrooms. It has improved quality and increased access. As a delivery system, IRI’s particular strength is to reach thousands of learners at low cost because it is a broadcast medium. Education Development Center (EDC) has been designing strategies to use new and different ICT applications that can be combined with IRI to increase its effectiveness in areas where using the radio alone faces difficult design or delivery challenges.

To this end, EDC is integrating MP3 players and a digital library technology with IRI in projects in Zambia and India. EDC is also designing strategies and DVD-based software that can be used to teach science with a single computer in the classroom in India.
